After a few years of riding 24′ wide boards on the Maliko run, I decided it was time to test my limits again. I’ve always enjoyed being in the shaping bay and having input on the boards I’m riding. I’m privileged to have that option living here on Maui. However, it’s always risky to change things like the rocker, bottom contours, lengths, widths and thickness. I’m lucky to know great shapers that are always happy to talk about board designs and characteristics. Once the board is shaped, the waiting game begins. I’m always questioning myself wondering if I went too narrow, too thick, or made too many changes, but that’s all just part of the fun. Being involved with the build and the mysteries that come along with it adds a lot of excitement to getting a new board. Red Nose Number Two was shaped at SIC Maui by Amir Arbel and she’s a beauty.
Love the personal touch!

Mark Raaphorst built a new camera mount that we connected to the back of a SIC race board. I teamed up with Livio Menelau to take it out for a test run. We paddled from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor riding wind swells on hollow, light weight SIC V1 Bullets with built in active steering systems.

A group of Maui paddlers catch the Moore Watertime shuttle to Maliko gulch for a downwind run. The trailer was loaded with outrigger canoes, surf ski kayaks and stand up paddle boards. The wind was ENE averaging 15-20mph gusting up to 30mph and the swell was 6-8 feet from the north.

Basic exercises that can be practiced in flat water on a stand up paddle board. This video covers bracing and steering with the paddle. Both of these skills will come in handy on a downwind run.

Exploring the open ocean water off the coast of Maui’s north shore on a 14′ Bullet from SIC made for downwind surfing. The wind was calm and the swell was just starting to arrive.
