Riding With The Wind

Just got a new custom SIC Bullet from SIC Maui. This board is 18′ x 23″ and super light. I met some friends down at Kahului harbor and we took the shuttle up to Maliko gulch. We unloaded our boards and hit the water. The wind was blowing down the coast at about 15 – 20mph. The board felt great!

Winter Maliko Run

After a week of big surf and light wind on Maui’s north shore, the trades came back strong this week. We had a great group of paddlers today eager to get some glides with the high wind advisory in effect. I mounted the camera to my hat and caught some of the fun as we surfed down the coast.

Maliko in September

The trade winds are still blowing and we are starting to see a couple of swells coming in on the north shore. September has been a great month for downwind runs so far.  We loaded up the SIC downwind boards and paddled from Maliko gulch to Kahului harbor catching some nice, long glides along the way in this video. You can check the Paddle With Riggs Facebook page for more pictures of Maliko runs in September.

I had a great time at the last Glide Camp in Madison, Wisconsin. I met some great members of the Madison paddling community. The scenery was beautiful. The guys at Paddleboard Specialists can hook you up with everything you need for your SUP. Looking forward to my next one in Hood River, OR.

Red Nose Number Two

After a few years of riding 24′ wide boards on the Maliko run, I decided it was time to test my limits again. I’ve always enjoyed being in the shaping bay and having input on the boards I’m riding. I’m privileged to have that option living here on Maui. However, it’s always risky to change things like the rocker, bottom contours, lengths, widths and thickness. I’m lucky to know great shapers that are always happy to talk about board designs and characteristics. Once the board is shaped, the waiting game begins. I’m always questioning myself wondering if I went too narrow, too thick, or made too many changes, but that’s all just part of the fun. Being involved with the build and the mysteries that come along with it adds a lot of excitement to getting a new board. Red Nose Number Two was shaped at SIC Maui by Amir Arbel and she’s a beauty.
